About i wonder… : Focus and Scope

i wonder… is an Azim Premji University publication focused on preparatory-stage (Grades III–V) EVS and middle-stage (Grades VI–VIII) science teaching. Introducing students to EVS and science at these stages can shape how they learn to observe their surroundings, question what they see, and reason with evidence. It can build the capacity to move between the familiar and the conceptual—from neighbourhood phenomena to scientific explanation and from community knowledge to shared standards of proof. The magazine brings together contributions from teachers who examine how this movement unfolds in classrooms and reflect on its role in cultivating habits of inquiry and informed participation in public life.

Articles‘ include accounts of thoughtful teaching practices by teachers who examine how children interpret observations, where misconceptions persist, how evidence is weighed, and how textbook claims are tested in real classrooms. ‘Resources‘ include tools for teachers to help students work with simple and inexpensive materials to observe local phenomena, measure change, compare patterns, and explain textbook claims using evidence. ‘Magazine Issues‘ include print editions for collective study within institutions, so that teachers can revisit scientific ideas, refine pedagogical decisions, and respond to evolving curricular expectations together. When contributions from different contexts are read alongside one another, patterns in how scientific understanding develops—and where it falters—become visible. By connecting teachers across schools and institutions, i wonder… also aims to strengthen professional knowledge in EVS and science—knowledge grounded in how students learn to inquire, interpret claims, and engage in public reasoning about scientific and environmental issues.
