Aim and readership:
i wonder… is an Azim Premji University publication. Our aim is to publish Articles and Resources that support the:
- Teaching and learning of preparatory-stage (Grades III–V) Environmental Studies (EVS) and middle-stage (Grades VI–VIII) science.
- Classroom practice of teachers in government schools and workshop practice of teacher educators who work with them.
We publish work that:
- Focuses on offering students direct experience of observing with attention, reasoning with evidence, testing textbook claims, and applying scientific ideas to their everyday world.
- Has been tried, reflected on, or refined through classroom practice.
- EVS and science teachers can use to plan and design classroom instruction in their own contexts.
- Highlights explicit connections to ideas, themes, or questions from the prescribed EVS or science textbooks.
- Allows grade-appropriate learning outcomes to guide its scope, depth, and level of abstraction.
- Shows how its key ideas or activities can be adapted to different classroom conditions, time constraints, and learning levels.
- Uses materials that are inexpensive and locally available, especially in government school settings.
- Invites teachers to think, decide, and respond to students, rather than follow fixed steps mechanically.
Submissions that are unlikely to be a good fit for i wonder…:
- Remain at the level of abstract discussion, general opinion, or policy commentary, without adequate grounding in classroom practice.
- Focus mainly on strengthening student recall of textbook facts and definitions, without supporting their conceptual understanding and science skills.
- State ideas and concepts without explaining them or sharing why they are relevant in students’ real worlds.
- Address concepts or themes unrelated to the grade-appropriate textbook or stage-appropriate goals defined in the most recent National Curriculum Framework.
- Are largely prescriptive, offering step-by-step instructions for teachers to follow mechanically, rather than sharing the questions, decisions, and connections teachers can explore in their classrooms.
- Depend on student experiences that require formal laboratory spaces and expensive instruments and materials.
Publication terms:
- i wonder… has zero tolerance for plagiarism. By submitting your work, you confirm that it is original and not under any legal restriction for publication (including prior copyright ownership).
- If your submission has been published elsewhere, please include a letter from the previous publisher granting permission for republication and mention this in an Author’s Note at the end of the article.
- If your submission is published in i wonder…, Azim Premji University retains the right to translate and disseminate it. Articles are currently translated into and published in Hindi and Kannada.
- If you wish to republish your work elsewhere after publication in i wonder…, please ensure that the republished version acknowledges that it was first published in i wonder….and provide the relevant link from the digital edition or university repository (https://publications.azimpremjiuniversity.edu.in/view/university_publications/fiel18=2E1/). We also request that you inform us if you republish, adapt, or translate the material, so we can understand its reach and use.
- Citations of our content must include the author/contributor name, year of publication, title, i wonder…, ISSN 2582-1636, the link from the digital edition or university repository, and the date you accessed the content. Here is an example (APA style): Sharma, A. (2025). Experiencing how things work. i wonder…. ISSN 2582-1636. URL: https://iwonder.azimpremjiuniversity.edu.in/experiencing-how-things-work/. - All articles are published under a Creative Commons Attribution–NonCommercial (CC BY-NC) 4.0 International license. For permissions beyond this license, please write to us.
- All images in i wonder… are accompanied by credit and licensing details.
- Most images are under a Creative Commons license. Some allow adaptations, while others do not. Please check the license type and use images in accordance with their specific terms.
- Images not under a Creative Commons license require permission from the rights owner for reuse, unless they are in the public domain.
- Some images show real classrooms, including children. These are published with permission from guardians and rights holders. If you wish to republish or use these images, you must seek permission from the rights holders and inform us.
- Some images are AI-generated. Each includes prompt details, creator, and generation date. You may use these images for non-commercial purposes with proper attribution, including the AI tool used, prompt, and date of creation.
What to submit:
- Either a brief pitch (about 200 words) or a complete draft (about 800–1500 words) in English, Hindi, or Kannada. Submissions should be written in simple, non-academic language. We are interested in seeing not only what you are sharing, but also why these ideas matter to you as a teacher, educator, or researcher.
- Photographs should be of print-ready quality (at least 300 dpi) and should include captions, credit, and licensing details. Photographs showing students may only be included with written permission from parents or guardians. To the extent possible, please avoid front-facing images.
- Please include a brief bio (no more than 50 words) that tells us something about your background in science and/or science education, and your areas of interest in school science.
